Aishwarya Rai in Devdas

Devdaas is a Hindi movie released in 2002. Conceived by the novel of Saratchandra Chatterji’s novel, written by Prakash Kapadia; Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali gives a hilarious touch to the tragic love story. Contrary to the regular Bollywood smash hit numbers Devdaas is the story of two ardent lovers Devdaas (Shahrukh Khan) and Parvati nick name Paro (Aishwarya Rai). The rumor s that this is the heaviest budget film of Bollywood ever made. Dresses and set designs are luxorious and the cast is also comparatively equal to costly jewels. Everything in the movie seems as the diamonds are scattered.

However, as the diamonds are not artfully designed and adjusted randomly they failed to have an impressive impact on the audience. This is the movie till it going on and at the end of movie people disperse without even bothering for the comments. There are so many contradict in the movies which arouse disgust in the audience. For example, Paro is told as a very poor girl yet she is wearing costly costumes and make up. Her mother seems not less than a rich lady. No attempt on the part of Devdaas made to stop Paro wedding with another person. Paro is showing no sign of poverty which made the situation comic when Devdaas mother rejected Paro as her Daughter-in-law because she is poor. On the other side when Madhuri appears on the scene as a lover of Shahrukh, she fails to show expressions.

The parts of the movie that are strong are performed by Devdaas family as his mother seems a true landlady and her daughter in law plays a true role of envious person. She represents the true essence of landlord’s nature can’t bear the distribution of property. However movie fails to make an impression as topic seems outdated and less appealing. Bhansali tries his best to make the film a classic story of tragic love and he is somewhat succeeded in cinematography, costumes and set designs but fails to develop the interest of audience as there are unnecessarily prolonged scenes, unwanted songs and addition of useless characters. In spite of all these pitfall movie strikes the Box Office and is nominated for the awards in many categories.
